DriveCam

LEAD UX DESIGNER

In 2013, I joined SapientNitro to work on a project for DriveCam, a truck driving monitoring system.

DriveCam

ISSUE
DriveCam was a global driver risk management company that offered video telematics driver safety programs for commercial trucking fleets.

The service maintains a camera on the road and a camera on the driver. If any 'incident' such as sudden breaking or swerving occurs, the camera will save the ten seconds before and after the incident for review. This video can be watched with a driving coach to help train drivers to be safer.

While a safer fleet of drivers makes DriveCam desirable for managers and fleet owners, the individual driver might find it obtrusive. We needed to design a system that would prove to be of value to the driver.

SOLUTION
I joined the project as the UX Lead two and a half months into the project. Prior to my joining, SapientNitro had a research team interviewing clients and stakeholders to establish more information about the project.

Starting with their research and supplementing it with additional interviews, I created a User Journey map. This helped pinpoint ways this service could add improvement to the daily lives and tasks of truck drivers (two maps were made - one for for long haul, one for medium haul).

Next, partnering with a business analyst, I established all of the requirements from the client and created a user flow map.

I then did some quick hand sketches to understand how the flow might work. These were used as a base to create Axure wireframes and prototypes.

The client was insistent that we replicate their current website creating a bare minium experience for mobile before we started exploring and modifying new design concepts.

We listened to him, but our discovery had revealed to us that this was not the best approach. So we presented him with two designs.  First we showed the bare minimum of a mobile version of their current web application, and then we presented a second more robust version – showing how they could incorporate new features and develop a long term strategy to become more integrated with both drivers and coaches lives, making DriveCam the preferred monitoring system.

IMPACT
In the end, the client went with the second option, and signed on to a second project to update the desktop web application along with the mobile app.
